ABOUT US
Atlanta Gallifreyans has been going strong since August of 2004. Our Yahoo Group was launched on August 3, and our first meeting was Aug 21. We now celebrate our anniversary in September, the first meeting after each year's Dragon*Con.
Our meetings usually consist of sharing food, catching up with each other, watching Doctor Who episodes, getting all the latest news and rumour about the series, and hanging out afterwards. Its all very informal.
We are currently working our way through the Jon Pertwee series. We've done all of his first season and are at the end of his second (Season Eight). We took a short break at our November 2006 meeting to watch the new DVD release of Troughton's "The Invasion". In the December 2006 meeting we'll watch one Pertwee and we'll also do our annual observance of "The Best of the Worst", showing one of those really awful DWs that are terribly fun to watch. We started that tradition last year with "Creature From the Pit". This year's nomination is "The Horns of Nimon".
We've had quite a few big events in recent months, like TimeGate in October and the Doctor Who Film Festival in November. The result was a swell of new folks learning about our club. Our November meeting had the highest attendance we've ever had. What a fun day we had, too!
April 21: Our meeting today was a really good one. Thanks to all who were able to make it out today! It was great to see everyone! We had a really great time today. We got to watch a couple of episodes from Season Three—"Smith and Jones" and "Gridlock". We attempted to start the day off with showing the Who special episode of Weakest Link featuring many of the actors from the series. Unfortunately that didn't work out, but we're going to fix the problem and hpefully show it again next month! Thanks to Robert R for bringing that and giving it a shot! So about the time we finished watching Episodes 1 and 3, we had the episode that aired on BBC tonight ("Daleks in Manhattan") in our hands, so we were able to show that! What a great experience....to finally be able to show a Who episode that no one in the room had ever seen before! And a pretty darn good episode it was, too! Thanks to Patrick and Russell for being willing to burn it and bring it for us.
After a bit of a break (we're such a chatty group!) we dived into the first two parts of the Jon Pertwee story "The Mutants". What a lovely contrast from the New Series episodes! That's what I love about long-lived shows like Who....you can have such a wildly different viewing experience depending on what story you watch and from what era it comes. Awesome!
September 18. 2006: Our meeting this past Saturday was truly something special. Our special guest, Louis Robinson, was witty, candid, full of antecdotes, and very entertaining. He spoke in some detail about his work on "The Dæmons" (which we watched later in the meeting) as well as other projects during his lengthy time at the BBC as film editor, writer, composer, director, etc. He was full of stories about various celebrities (I won't repeat here what he called Bonnie Langford's mother!). He's also quite a Sherlock Holmes afficionado. Overall, he was warm and gracious and made our September meeting one to remember.
